War of the Worlds (2005) Review

I've been thinking about it for a while, and I have decided to rate my movie as letters and not numbers, because I tend to change the numbers too often, and it starts off as 60 is good, but then later 60 is awful, and soon enough my ratings would make no sense. Letter grades will make more sense, and I think I will do my reviews like EW's.

As the movie started out, I noticed right away the low quality of the movie. Sure, it was on dvd and not bluray, but any other dvd I own had better quality than that. When we really got into the plot, and you saw tripods, you were exposed to awful effects. I know that was back in 2005, but 1979's Alien and 1986's Aliens had better effects, and that's not a good thing. A tom cruise, steven Spielberg scifi movie based on an epic book, should get the effects right, out of all things. Even with those awful effects, there were other bad things. None of the characters were very likeable. The ending wasn't satisfying. It suddenly changed from the worst situation possible to the best without giving us much of an explanation. But, there were a few good things. Tom Cruise acted greatly, and I'm surprised it isn't regarded as one of his finer performances. Also, the movie kept me interested and a little terrified. So before, when I compared it to Alien for having bad effects, it was much scarer than what is supposed to be a horror masterpiece. Sure, war of the worlds had its moments, but it was much less memorable than it should have been.

Movie Rating: C+

Tom Cruise, great as the lead as usual.
