2014 Movies So Far

A Ranking of All the 2014 Movies I've Already seen

I only watch a movie in theaters when I really want to see it. I've seen 24 movies released in 2014, the latest released: Guardians of the Galaxy on Aug 1, and the earliest release(s) I haven't seen are neighbors and chef on may 9. I think 2014 is a great year, but there are a few movies on this list that are just awful. And of course I'll make a new list when I've seen more.

24. Locke (Theaters: April 25, DVD: August 12)

I'm not going to write anything for plenty of the movies on here, but Locke was exceptionally awful. I excepted a mystery-thriller movie that would be very engaging. Instead I got a irrelevant and boring movie. If you haven't seen it yet, you should know that it has nothing to do with anything and nothing happens in the movie. It's one and half boring hours out of some random's loser life. It would have been more exciting if we saw more characters, but no, we get to watch one guy the whole movie. It worked in buried (2010) because things actually happened in the movie, and those things dealt with life and death, so it made buried a very good mystery thriller with a terrible ending. In Locke, they could have made his family get taken hostage, and his had to negotiate with the criminals who took her or something along the lines. But instead they make the movie about him getting fired, having an affair, and talking to his wife and kids. I'm not saying it's a bad idea to these ideas in a movie, but to make the entire plot about calling people on his phone is just insane. Tom Hardy gave a great performance but his character was very unlikable. If the movie already sucks, it doesn't help you if the main character sucks too. Do you understand why Locke is my 5th least favorite movie of all time? And I also need to call bulls**t on ew for giving this an A.

23. The Monuments Men (Theaters: February 7, DVD: May 20)

I'm just going to say I had high expectations of this movie because of the brilliant casting, director, and plot and it turned out to be very boring.

22. Divergent (Theaters: March 21, DVD: August 5)

I had crappy expectations for this movie, but I didn't think it was going to be bad. Crappy acting, lame characters, boring plot (that's book, so I guess you cant make fun of the movie for that), awful score, female action lead (I would say from the book, but she was good in the book and the movie didn't convert it) and so many awful, random actors make me call bulls**t on ew for giving this a B+. X-Men: DOFP also got a B+. Were they on drugs or something?

21. Transcendence (Theaters: April 18, DVD: July 22)

I wouldn't call transcendence bad, unlike the last three movies. But you not it's not a good sign when you have a cast of Johnny Depp, Morgan Freeman, and Paul Bettany and Cillian Murphy is my favorite character. Not really paul bettany, but Johnny Depp and Morgan Freeman are supposed to have good characters.

20. Veronica Mars (Theaters: March 14, DVD: May 6)

There are no more movies in this list that I would call bad. But the only good thing in this movie was the James Franco cameo. I can't remember why I ever wanted to watch this or anything about this forgettable movie, but at least I know now not to watch the show.

19. Pompeii (Theaters: February 21, DVD: May 21)

The trailer for Pompeii had to be one of the greatest trailer I had ever seen. It looked like the next gladiator (I personally didn't care for gladatior, but with that kind of audience ratings). It didn't at all live up to its epic trailer and was a disappointment of the highest level. It did have a few good to great moments but it could have been so much better.

18. Lone Survivor (Theaters: January 10, DVD: June 3)

Again, another instantly forgettable film that I completely regret watching. The good things in this one would be Mark Wahlberg, and the shootouts.

17. Lucy (Theaters: July 25, DVD: Not Announced)

This is the first movie on this list that I saw in theaters (on opening day) and the first movie that isn't released on dvd yet. It had a few cool moments, but it was a really weird movie that could have been so much better.

16. Noah (Theaters: March 28, DVD: July 29)

Again, another movie not living up to its expectations.

15. The Amazing Spider-Man (Theaters: May 2, DVD: August 19)

The villains sucked, the score sucked and so many other things sucked to make this the worst Spiderman. There were a few likeable things and I would say I like it, but it needs so much improvement. My most disappointing movie of the year. Watched this one in theaters.

14. A Million Ways to Die In the West (Theaters: May 30, DVD: October 7)

A great cast. great directing, funny, good plot, good setting, and a great django cameo make it hard to remember any bad things about this movie.

13. The Lego Movie (Theaters: February 7, DVD: June 17)

It was good, but disappointing. I just hope How to Train Your Dragon 2 is better.

12. The Grand Budapest Hotel (Theaters: March 7, DVD: June 17)

Good cast, and funnier than I expected.

11. Bad Words (Theaters: March 14, DVD: July 8)

Funny, and a great performance and directing by Jason Bateman.

10. Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (Theaters: January 17, DVD: June 10)

It wasn't as good as I expected, but it was thrilling, had a great cast, and was by far the best Jack Ryan yet. But it took 6 long months to come out on dvd. Absurd!

9. Hercules (Theaters: July 25, DVD: November 4)

Great action, and good dialogue. Had good end credits, and was very enjoyable. Saw this one in theaters on opening day.

8. Captain America: The Winter Soldier (Theaters: April 4, DVD: September 9)

Was a good movie, with good action, but also (like Amazing Spiderman 2) a very disappointing movie. Saw this one in theaters on opening weekend.

7. Transformers: Age of Extinction (Theaters: June 27, DVD: September 30)

Much better casting, setting, and action make this the best transformers yet. Watched this in theaters on opening weekend.

6. Non-Stop (Theaters: February 28, DVD: June 10)

Such a great mystery-thriller, this movie reminded me how great Liam Neeson is.

5. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (Theaters: July 11, DVD: Still Unannounced)

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was a little on the disappointing side, but great performances from Jason Clarke and Andy Serkis, plus the greatest effects of the year easily made up for it. Watched this in theaters.

4. Edge of Tomorrow (Theaters: June 6, DVD: October 7)

Tom Cruise is my favorite actor, and when I saw the first trailer I was disappointed he was going to make another bad movie like Oblivion. I was wrong and this movie was incredibly great. Sometimes Rotten Tomatoes gives awful ratings, but I want to quote what they said here "Gripping, well-acted, funny, and clever, Edge of Tomorrow offers entertaining proof that Tom Cruise is still more than capable of shouldering the weight of a blockbuster action thriller" and I couldn't agree more. Unfortunately, it has the ugliest DVD and Blu-ray cover of the year. and possibly ever. Watched this in theaters on opening weekend.

3. X-Men: Days of Future Past (Theaters: May 23, DVD: October 14)

This was also a little on the disappointing side but great acting, comedic tone, great action, and pure enjoyment made up for it. Watched it in theaters on opening weekend.

2. Guardians of the Galaxy (Theaters: August 1, DVD: December 9)

Great action, characters, setting, comedy, acting, music, after credits scene made this movie the surprise hit of the summer. Watched in theaters on opening weekend.

1. 22 Jump Street (Theaters: June 13, DVD: November 18)

This is my favorite movie of all time for obvious reasons. Saw in theaters on opening weekend.
